Master in Regenerating Intermediate Landscapes

The need to regenerate the large suburban sprawl, the shopping centers and commercial strips, or to preserve agricultural land and river banks strongly arises in our metropolitan regions. All these episodes no longer respond to local government boundaries, but to ad hoc constraints of functional, morphological or environmental character. Intermediate approaches, those between the local and regional level, are therefore needed to resolve conflicts and develop new opportunities.
The “Master in Regenerating Intermediate Landscapes. Sustainable strategies for contemporary landscapes” is devoted to provide the tools and methodology required to address these needs. This program is based on traditional core values of European planning, specifically: the concern and promotion of local identity and environmental values and the commitment to social equity. This program integrates current research by international experts into a  comprehensive approach where economics and management combine with ecology and culture.
Our program consists of 60 ECTS structured around 4 modules and 8 courses during one academic year made up of two semesters. In order to see our syllabus, course description and financial aid check out our BLOG:

Biodigital Conference with Alberto T. Estévez

In the twenties and thirties of the 20th century, when some architects were disposed systematically to configure modern world, they did it stimulated for a cultural pressure, for a correct adaptation to new times, and fighting for minimum conditions of human existence. On the other hand, today the urgency is bigger. It is about the entire planetary subsistence. The question is not any more a simple caprice, neither an intellectual necessity, neither sensibility for losing less favoured people. Now, the necessity is global, without reservations of classes, races or religions. The whole planet is in front of danger of no-sustainability for all mankind.

By chance, now in this crucial moment, are offered new techniques of an enormous potential: biological techniques and digital techniques. And even fusion of both, in something that can be named biodigital architecture. One that has incorporated the advantages proportioned by the understanding of genetics in both ways, the biological and the digital way, that permit to face with hope some continuity also worthy, but this time a dignity for all The Earth. Then, as the ones that made efforts to break with the ancient classical tradition to found the new modern tradition, we are in front of the challenge of creating the future tradition of biodigital and genetics. For this is necessary that people work on three key elements: researchteaching and profession. This is exactly what we have been doing in Barcelona from 2000, with the Genetic Architecture Research Group and Ph.D. Programme, with the Biodigital Architecture Master’s Degree and with the Genetic Architectures Office. There we learn & teach, we make research and we design: Knowing that there are sufficient differential parameters to predict a complete age’s change. Today, after the first decade of our new Century, it is time to explain, to check, to discuss, fascinations, inspirations, experiences, that the graduates of these Research Group, Master’s Degree and Architecture Office have done in the developing of this biodigital architecture and genetics, up to now.

Postgraduate Degree in Materials, Complexity and Technique

Traditional building systems are being replaced thanks to new technologies. The appearance of new building systems goes hand in hand with innovation and the development of new materials, created in conjunction with the construction industry.

Nowadays projects are subject to high technical requirements, technical quality controls and extensive and complex regulations. As a result, professionals must acquire new knowledge aimed at improving the technical quality of their projects.

Considering the materiality of the architectural space is a process parallel to abstract consideration of the space. Following on from this is technique, bringing with it the appearance of new geometries and structural systems, buildings conceived from a material perspective which are in harmony with their surroundings, constructions designed to be energy efficient, etc. Concepts which appear naturally in current architectural projects.

This course aims to treat these themes in detail, offering new theoretical and methodological tools intended to improve and broaden knowledge in the field of architectural projects.

Master’s Degree in Scenography and Contemporary Cities

The Master’s Programme in Scenography and Contemporary Cities addresses subject matter ranging from the basics of traditional scenography to modern interpretation and design of urban locations. The class lecturers are professionals who work in the theatre, virtual film and motion pictures.

This programme includes on-site experiences in urban locations such as real theatres. Through a continuous re-elaboration process, students will build performance experiences in the city, theatres and virtual spaces, while they compile data, memories and ideas from their shared relationship with the urban territory.

Students will define their ability to analyse urban reality as they improve their knowledge of and expertise with stage design, by producing a storyboard, managing lighting, and building sets. After gathering different levels of experience, such as their local memories of the city, personal views, perspectives and historical atmospheres, they will design and create theatrical spaces in the natural complexity of the disciplines of architecture, theatre and contemporary cities.

The programme boasts institutional connections with other international educational institutions such as the Institute of Design and Technology at Zurich University of the Arts (idt-ZHdK, Switzerland), the Central School of Speech and Drama at the University of London (CSSD, England) and the Faculty of Fine Arts at Brno University of Technology (VUT, Czech Republic).

Postgraduate Course in Accessibility (online)

The 21st century has given rise to various regulations and requirements in many countries that attempt to improve accessibility and break down architectural and communication barriers in order to enhance the quality of life of all citizens, particularly that of elderly and disabled persons.

But in spite of these regulations, many professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering, design and construction continue to apply accessibility criteria as obligatory impositions, often adding them onto projects “a posteriori,” and without properly taking into account the advantages offered by public spaces, itineraries, elements, services or products, nor the importance and value of making them accessible to persons with limited mobility or communication skills.

This Postgraduate Course provides an opportunity for discovering that access is not merely a need for select persons with disabilities, but rather an advantage for all members of society. The curriculum promotes solving problems of accessibility from the very beginning of the project in a way that is visually subtle, economically feasible, and aesthetically in line with the original design, in order to develop standardised, safe, and comfortable solutions that incorporate new technologies, when applicable, and altogether enhance the comfort and quality of public services.

The course is offered via virtual online work sessions that encompass practical and theoretical elements relevant to the programme. Coursework also includes case studies, which help to contextualise the various concepts addressed in each module.

Master’s degree in International Cooperation: Sustainable Emergency Architecture

The need for qualified professionals that can develop projects and manage urban planning processes in developing countries is clear. We can find the highest urbanisation ratios in the world in these countries and it is here where international cooperation is most needed.

If we add to this the impact of an earthquake, tsunami or a war, the situation is critical and intervention is required in architecture and urban planning areas, in order to know how to develop a plan of temporary developments and settlements, with quick construction processes that are efficient under extreme conditions; with the management of the existing resources, offering solutions that can be implemented in this type of situations where unfortunately we must work under different forms of pressure.

The purpose of the Master’s degree is to face these situations and it is aimed at preparing future architects and professionals to deal with regional planning and emergency construction projects, i.e., professionals that can arrive at these ‘non-places’ and can use specific tools to apply the appropriate strategies in order to help develop the communities affected by such catastrophes.

Therefore, it aims to train experts that can provide a solution to large-scale problems generated by a catastrophe; professionals who can study and research materials, urban planning, the economy, the environment and society, based on ecological and sustainable principles.

This Master’s degree is part of the ERASMUS MUNDUS European cooperation program, considered to be one of the most prestigious programs in the world. The MUNDUS URBANO program brings together the following universities: Technische Universität Darmstadt, Università “Tor Vergata”, Rome, Université Pierre-Mendès-France Grenoble and Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Barcelona, in order to develop a joint European Master’s degree.

Master’s Degree in Accessibility (online)

There is a social and market demand for companies and professionals who are able to respond to the requirements set out by Design for All which are based on improving the accessibility of our environment.

This social and business reality brings with it the need to open new paths in the specialisation of professionals which develop both areas of knowledge and encourage an exhaustive understanding of the different techniques and skills, giving this union a high level of vocational and developmental potential.

These professionals will form part of a key future sector, providing solutions for the elderly, the severely disabled and those with temporary reduced mobility and/or communication. Having completed their training, they may work in public or private companies or organisations, giving rise to the new role of “Accessibility Consultant”.

This master’s is divided into two subject areas: Accessibility (technique) and Design for All (social).

Master’s Degree in Biodigital Architecture

This Master’s degree in Biodigital Architecture offers a specialisation course of study at the Master’s level in connection with a research line about genetics applied to architecture in a natural and digital way. Both components address the study of architecture from ecological, environmental and digital vantage points.

Within the context of the “Genetic Architecture” study underway at the UIC, this postgraduate programme pays special attention to new digital-cybernetic and ecological-environmental projects in architecture.

The programme is primarily oriented towards the relevance of new biodigital paradigms in project development and addresses the concept of generative genetics in both practical and theoretical capacities.

The curriculum also touches on the idea of morphogenesis, through working with genetic software programs, developing grammar for formal systems and studying developmental processes and emergent systems. New technologies are bringing us towards new means of production (Data Driven Production, CNC), which in turn lead to unconventional architectural formulations that resemble the principles of genetics (variation, mutation) more closely than those of industrial chain production.

The programme is taught and coordinated by an impressive team of renowned professors from across the globe, all of whom have brought significant contributions to the field of contemporary architecture.
